The Truth Behind Oil Changes

Repair garages often make very little income from cheap oil changes. This puts pressure on the business to make up for that missing income. Sometimes, this results in unnecessary service recommendations, but it can also result in legitimate recommendations taking a customer by surprise.

For example, have you ever heard someone say, “I just brought my car in for a $30 oil change! Why did they tell me the car needs $2,500 worth of work!?”

There is also the danger of sub-par fluids and filters. There are many varieties of engine oil, and engine oil needs to be the right type for the engine it is used in. There is more to this than conventional vs. synthetic, 5w20 vs 5w30, and so on. Some oil filters are more efficient than others, and some filters don’t have sufficient capacity to keep the oil clean until it’s due to be changed again.

You often get what you pay for; oil changes are no exception.
